Trim your wick to the length recommended size on the warning label on the bottom of your candle. A wick trimmer is the perfect tool to trim wicks to appropriate sizes. If you do not have a wick trimmer a sharp pair of scissors will do the trick to get the wick to the proper size. Trim wicks while candle is at room temperature and hardened. Trimming wicks after burning will be more difficult to trim because of the wax absorbed into the wick being soft.
If you want to reduce flickering and smoke, keep candle away from drafts. If you notice that the melt pool of your candle is favoring a particular direction rotate your candle to even out the melt pool for highest quality of scent throw.
Melt pool is the area of melted wax at the top of your candle after lighting. After large amounts of testing, we have selected the proper size wick to go with the premium waxes we use for each candle. Wick sizing is very important in candle making due to proper heat distribution. If a wick is too small, your melt pool will not reach the glass, cratering may occur and not give the strongest scent throw. If the wick is too large your candle will burn too quickly, and you will not get sufficient burn time for your candle. For the best burn and strongest scent throw, it is important to allow your candle enough time to produce a melt pool covering the entire surface of the candle to all edges of the glass. Limiting burn times when lighting your candle and not allowing the melt pool to reach the edge of the glass may create a cratering affect. This will limit the strength of the scent throw and wax will be wasted by staying on the edge of the glass. If the crater in a candle gets deep enough it is possible to drown the wick from the wax on the edge of the glass melting and covering the wick itself. If you notice that you have not given the candle enough time to create the proper melt pool on multiple occasions and the crater is becoming a problem, you may be able to salvage the candle by removing the wax built up on the edge to create a level topped candle once again.
